The trainers at Best Paw Forward are very active in the rescue community and we are thrilled to be able to offer our services to help dogs in need. Jamie and Michael volunteer for both Focus on Homeless Animals and German Shepherd Rescue of SE PA and often foster tough dogs for both rescues. On this page, we are featuring some of our rescue partners and highlighting the services we offer rescues.

Animal Care Sanctuary
Animal Care Sanctuary was founded as a non-profit organization by Lesley Sinclair in 1967 in Tom’s River, NJ. After outgrowing her operation in a converted chicken farm there, Sinclair moved to rural East Smithfield, PA in 1982. Ms. Sinclair passed away in 1998, leaving a legacy to care for the animals at the organization which she founded.
Animal Care Sanctuary is in it's 46th year as a non-profit no kill animal sanctuary as they continue the work that helps homeless animals everywhere but most importantly, the animals who have found ACS as their temporary or forever home. As the nation’s fourth largest no-kill sanctuary, ACS welcomes animals that are in particular need, those that others deem “unadoptable” because of illness, injury, age, or because they just have not been able to find a home. At this time, they have more than 700 residents at our East Smithfield and Wellsboro locations including dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and birds. The caring staff and volunteers at ACS work with these animals to find them permanent homes, but we offer lifetime care if this is not possible. ACS also offer animal care workshops, dog training courses including a masters course, grooming, and a low cost spay/neuter clinic available to the public five days a week.
Best Paw Forward's Jamie Badial and Have Leash, Will Travel's Jennifer Lane have started a non-profit volunteer effort, Mutts on the Move, to help transport adoptable animals from local kill shelters to Animal Care Sanctuary, approved rescue groups and carefully screened adoptive homes to help them start their new lives. Focus on Homeless Animals
FOHA is a 501(c)3 non profit animal rescue organization of dedicated volunteers, based in Washington Crossing, PA. They partner with local open admission shelters in the community in order to find homes for companion animals. These shelters do not have the luxury of time to place all these animals because they have to accept every companion animal that enters their doors. FOHA removes animals from these shelters so more animals have a chance to be rescued. They also accept owner surrendered pets in order to prevent those pets from having to enter crowded animal shelters.
FOHA services include spay/neuter; routine medical care; emergency medical care; microchip; behavior evaluations and assessments; behavioral interventions, grooming, socializing, and exercising.
Best Paw Forward and Focus on Homeless Animals have partnered to give the animals an even better chance. Best Paw Forward is assisting FOHA with shelter temperament evaluations, exercise, rehabilitation and behavior modification so the dogs they save are ready to be part of your family.

Shep
Shep is a Finnish Lapphund (mix?) that is a young adult. Shep has been training with Best Paw Forward since being saved by FOHA in October 2012. Shep gets very excited when he sees other animals and sometimes has a hard time controlling himself. Through counter conditioning and the use of positive reinforcement, Shep has learned how to behave better in the presence of other animals. While he will still become excited when encountering other dogs on walks, he is much quicker to refocus on his handler. |

German Shepherd Rescue of Southeastern PA
German Shepherd Rescue of Southeastern Pennsylvania ("GSR-SP") was formed as a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation in early-1999. Many of the people involved in GSR-SP were formerly involved with one or more other German Shepherd rescue organizations. GSR-SP came into existence in order to address the need to provide a rescue network to shelters in the Philadelphia and immediate surrounding four county area. At the present time, GSR-SP is serving the overflow needs of shelters in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery Counties.
Jamie has been a volunteer with GSR-SP for over 6 years and Michael has recently joining her. Jamie's love for dogs and training began while fostering for the organization as well as filling various roles within the group including shelter assessments, fundraising events and office work in addition to fostering.
